CHEMOTHERAPY

By using strong drugs, chemotherapy kills cancer cells and stops their proliferation or decelerates their growth. Many chemotherapy drugs are available and a few of them can be used in combination with each other and also can be used along with surgical operation.
Some of the chemotherapy drugs can be received in tablet or capsule forms; but it is usually given intravenously. Since this therapy method is intended for whole of the body, it is called systemic therapy. Since chemotherapy drugs reach all the points in the body via bloodstream, it may also contribute to killing metastasis.

The chemotherapy amount that a patient can receive varies depending on the cancer type, the drugs used, and the patient's response to the therapy. Drugs are given by applying intervals between the therapies so as to allow the patient’s body to rest (for example, drug is given intravenously for 1 day, then is repeated after 3 weeks of pause and is continued according to this sequence).

In case the chemotherapy is being applied as an ancillary after a surgical operation, it is called “ancillary therapy“. In such a case, the objective of the chemotherapy is to kill cancer cells that may remain in the body after the surgical operation, by being distributed to the body via bloodstream.

As for the “new ancillary therapy”, it is the process of applying chemotherapy to the patient before the surgical operation. The objective of this therapy method is to increase the success possibility of the surgical operation, by making the cancer smaller or decreasing its prevalence.

After the examination of the stray dog named “Efe” that was taken to our clinic for lameness complaint in the left foreleg, the leg having a problem was x-rayed. In line with the applications carried out, it was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, and amputation of the left foreleg was made by surgical operation. Following the operation, ancillary chemotherapy with regular intervals was started.

Now he is so happy and continues his life painlessly.
